Event Description

All helpers are at risk of developing Compassion Fatigue (CF), a natural consequence of working empathically to help the suffering or traumatized. As we hear the stories of others’ trauma, we can develop our own symptoms posttraumatic stress, symptoms that may culminate in emotional disengagement and loss of empathy for others’ suffering.

CF occurs when primary traumatic stress (the trauma we experience directly in our own lives), secondary traumatic stress (the trauma we experience indirectly through hearing others’ trauma stories) and burnout (the chronic stress of perceived work demands exceeding perceived resources) converge in the life of a helper leading to symptoms such as the loss of one’s sense of humour, deep exhaustion, hopelessness, the sense that one can never do enough, the inability to listen to another’s pain, isolation, anxiety, anger and cynicism, profound sadness, emotional numbing, and self medicating behaviours.
