Event Description

For decades we have looked at behaviour such as impulsivity, inattention, hyperactivity and oppositionalism, as personality characteristics. But these behaviours are a representation of diminished neural pathways in the brain. Children are most often not misbehaving willfully. They are encountering task demands that exceed their skill-sets resulting in misbehaviour. Our role as parents, teachers and clinicians is to identify what skills any given child needs to have in order to meet expectations and teach them those skills.

Applying research from neuroscience, occupational therapy and physical education, Dr. Kenney we will explore practical brain-based interventions to enhance clinical practice. Exploring motor-intelligence therapy and its brain-based interventions, we will apply a three-tiered model to parenting, that clinicians can use in the office, on the basketball court and in family homes to effectively treat ADHD, anxiety, behaviour and learning challenges. Clinicians will create their own practice methodologies applying current brain research. Bring blank paper and coloured markers and wear comfortable clothing as we’ll “move to learn” in this presentation.

Higher functioning cognitive skills such as organization, planning, previewing, inhibition and self-regulation are essential for successful social, educational and interpersonal development. These are skills that some children are born with, but many are not. The great news! We can teach skill sets to children that will calm their bodies, enhance their thinking, improve their learning and help them be healthy social beings.
