Event Description
People with developmental disabilities experience mental health issues as a result of physical, emotional and sexual abuse and neglect in greater numbers than the general public, yet there is little assessment, treatment or support. There is often a failure to recognize the nature of trauma in the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Histories of abuse may be overlooked and instead behavioural presentations of trauma may be attributed to non-compliance, behavioural disorders, or psychiatric disorders, and as such are treated inappropriately. Many direct support providers have not received the required training to support this population in healing from trauma.
